It’s amazing to get feedback like this and at the risk of sounding like every asshole artist on earth after they do ANYTHING, it really does “make it all worthwhile.”
Coming from a completely different world (musically = commercial pop, regionally = Canada, Label-wise = TOTAL OPPOSITE OF ARTSY) it is amazing to get recognition and support for making the ill-advised decision to go it alone and relaunch in another country without label support, on a rather self-indulgent project – see, I’m just as wanky.
Via London blog and total tastemaker Some Of It Was True:
I really admire Dolls. After releasing two hip-hop/pop hits via Warner as Nikki Awesome & The Royal Society, she decided to move all the way from Toronto to London and go it alone: the eventual, beguiling result is an entirely self-produced, self-envisioned EP, Secret Sulk, of synthy wave-pop – some of it helter-skelter and laserish, other parts (such as Better Half, below) swampy, vampish and dark. It takes guts to leave the mainstream and try your luck with us fussy, wanky eclectics, and nor does it often end well (uh, really, has anyone, like, seen Jack Penate?). So good on Dolls. And even better on her for doing it so catchily.
To learn more about Dolls, I thoroughly condone the reading of this excellent interview with A Cultured Lad. She sounds an absolute, filthy-mouthed hoot.
